The latest generation of the Coperion ZSK 18 MEGAlab laboratory extruder combines proven ZSK series functions with new developments that focus on flexible and intuitive handling.

Coperion ZSK 18 MEGAlab extruder significantly more flexible

Coperion has equipped its ZSK 18 MEGAlab laboratory extruder with numerous new functions that provide significantly greater flexibility and safety in handling
Pluggable cartridge heaters instead of hard wired ones now allow for rapid barrel reconfiguration as well as straightforward cartridge heater exchange. An electrically securable maintenance door on the gearbox lantern increases operational safety and at the same time provides quick access, reducing downtimes for screw changes and system maintenance. Moreover, feeders for this laboratory machine can now be placed on a newly developed patent-pending feeding platform which allows up to four feeders to be arranged with maximum flexibility for adding ingredients in myriad ways.

The ZSK 18 MEGAlab, with a screw diameter of 18 mm, has a specific torque of 11.3 Nm/cm³ and achieves a maximum rotation speed of 1,200 min-1. It is ideally suited for use in research and development projects as well as for production of minimum quantities.

Optimized feeding platform

The new, patent-pending feeding platform makes adding ingredients noticeably easier. It is firmly attached to the ZSK 18 MEGAlab extruder, allowing for flexible positioning of up to four feeders on all barrels of the process section as well as on the ZS-B side feeders. Moreover, the new feeding platform, which can be moved laterally along the machine, allows the feeders to be rotated and raised or lowered as needed.

New functions for safe, simple handling

Along with optimizing feeder positioning, Coperion has also incorporated proven functions from the ZSK series into the ZSK 18 MEGAlab. Among these, for example, are pluggable cartridge heaters. They are individually connected using IP67 plugs and can be removed for maintenance and barrel reconfiguration in no time, no electrician needed. Another improvement involves the gearbox lantern with easy access that can be equipped with an electronically secured maintenance opening. As soon as the screw shafts come to a complete stop, the door can be opened without tools. The screw shaft coupling is immediately accessible for maintenance purposes; machine downtimes drop significantly and completely safe servicing is assured. The machine can only be restarted when the maintenance doors are closed.

Coperion K-Tron Expands ProRate PLUS Feeder Line for powder additives Coperion K-Tron Expands ProRate PLUS Feeder Line with twin screw feeder for powder additives; Preconfigured Feeders for Plastics Industry
Coperion K-Tron Expands ProRate PLUS Feeder Line for powder additives
Coperion K-Tron Expands ProRate PLUS Feeder Line with twin screw feeder for powder additives; Preconfigured Feeders for Plastics Industry Coperion K-Tron announces the expansion of the original ProRate™ PLUS feeder portfolio with more solutions for feeding powders. A ProRate PLUS-MT twin screw feeder will be added to the product line that will be available end of April 2023. Together with the recently introduced ProFlow™ bulk solids activator the new twin screw feeder is an efficient solution for feeding powder additives in plastics applications. Last year Coperion K-Tron developed a completely new feeder line built on 100 years of feeding experience to provide a robust and reliable feeder for simple feeding applications in the plastics industry. The ProRate PLUS continuous gravimetric feeder line is an economical solution and offers a quick return on investment due to its good price-performance ratio and fast delivery times. The original product line featured three single screw feeders that are ideal for the feeding of pellets, granules and other free-flowing bulk materials in secondary plastics applications.

Coperion Recycling Innovation Center: State-Of-The-Art Test Lab Construction of a new state-of-the-art test laboratory for plastics recycling applications. Forward-looking investment for more sustainability in plastics recycling.
Coperion Recycling Innovation Center: State-Of-The-Art Test Lab
Construction of a new state-of-the-art test laboratory for plastics recycling applications. Forward-looking investment for more sustainability in plastics recycling. Coperion GmbH has initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art recycling test lab at its Niederbiegen/Weingarten, Germany, production facility. The new Coperion Recycling Innovation Center will be built in the immediate vicinity of Coperion’s existing Test Center for Bulk Solids Handling. Driven by rising demands worldwide for a circular plastics economy, a clear trend has taken shape over the last years toward more recycling. Coperion is meeting this trend, not only with its equipment and processes designed for recycling applications, but also with its new Recycling Innovation Center. At the facility, customers will be able to develop and test new, sustainable products and recycling processes together with Coperion’s experts. All essential recycling process stages will be covered within the facility including materials conveying, feeding, extrusion, pelletizing, and materials postprocessing. In addition, Coperion will conduct its own research activities

Chemical Recycling of Mixed Plastic Waste Coperion Supplies Twin Screw Extruder to Ghent University for Chemical Plastic Recycling.
Chemical Recycling of Mixed Plastic Waste
Coperion Supplies Twin Screw Extruder to Ghent University for Chemical Plastic Recycling. Due to its intensive dispersion and devolatilization output, Coperion’s ZSK twin screw extruder is extremely well suited for energy-efficient chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste. Stuttgart, June 2021 – Coperion is supplying an extrusion system to Ghent University in Belgium for comprehensive research and development tasks in chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste. Coperion designed this laboratory system, built upon a ZSK 18 MEGAlab twin screw extruder, especially for chemical recycling of post-consumer waste within a throughput range of 1-10 kg per hour. Along with the extruder, it includes a feeder from Coperion K-Tron as well as a vacuum unit. Plastic waste, especially packaging waste, is generally a mixture of materials with a high degree of contamination. Recycling this raw material is usually difficult, as sorting and cleaning of waste is in many cases neither economically viable nor technically feasible. Chemical recycling is a promising process
