Van Beek has developed the eggshell dryer for drying crushed eggshells in a continuous industrial process. This dryer heats the eggshells to 130 degrees to give a pathogen-free, fine-grained and high quality lime with a maximum moisture content of 1%. No odour nuisance This end product can be marketed as a soil improver or lime for the animal feed or cement industry. By removing the moisture odour nuisance is a thing of the past. Less than 4% moisture The eggshell dryer is a machine with a single screw and operates as a paddle dryer. The machine requires little installation space in an automated line that breaks the eggs to separate the contents from the shells. After dehumidification the line crushes the shells, after which they land in the eggshell dryer. This removes the last moisture from them, leaving less than 4% moisture. In order to process empty bags in as efficient, cheap and environmentally friendly a way as possible, Van Beek designed the bag compactor. Did you know that the Van Beek bag compactor will from now on also be able to compact big bags easily? Technique adapted to big bags The operation of the bag compactor is as effective as it is efficient. The screw in this machine compacts empty bags, which reduces the volume by some 60 to 80 percent. The market asked Van Beek if the bag compactor also worked for big bags. The answer was no, but Van Beek likes to think up solutions and set to work on this one. “Big bags are bigger and made of a coarse fabric that is a bit more difficult to compact”, says Joram van der Heijden, sales engineer at Van Beek. “During testing it was found that big bags are in particular more difficult to feed into the screw. Using lump breakers from Van Beek the ash-processing SARU units of Shell in Pernis are running at full speed again. “The lump breakers have proved they can meet the requirements of our plant”, says Mario Graca, process engineer at Shell. For big projects of this type Shell is of course playing it safe. The installation was preceded by detailed discussions and tests on site. Why a lump breaker? SARU stands for Soot Ash Removal Unit. This is where Shell has for decades already been processing ash and other hazardous substances that are produced in other processes in Pernis.
