Non-Contact Radar Measurement: Technology Behind NivoRadar® Sensors

Precise Level Measurement with Non-Contact Radar. UWT offers a range of different versions for you

Dust, high temperatures, or turbulent surfaces – demanding measurement conditions are part of everyday life in many industries. Non-contact level measurement using radar has proven to be one of the most precise and reliable methods for a wide range of diverse applications.
Thanks to radar technology, level measurement can be carried out accurately and without contact – even under extreme conditions.

How Does Non-Contact Radar Measurement Work?

Radar sensors use electromagnetic waves to determine the fill level. A high-frequency signal is emitted, reflected by the surface of the medium, and received as an echo. The time between transmission and reception determines the fill level.

The 80 GHz technology ensures a highly focused signal with a narrow beam angle of just 3°. This enables precise measurements even in narrow tanks or installations with complex internals.
Additionally, antennas with a small beam angle can be positioned closer to the tank wall, reducing interference reflections from obstacles such as agitators.

NivoRadar® – Flexible Solutions for Every Application

UWT offers various models to meet different requirements:
  • NivoRadar® NR 3:
High-precision 80 GHz sensor for bulk solids in silos and containers. It delivers reliable measurements even in dusty environments or with irregular surfaces. The 3° beam angle enables measurements up to 120 m / 394 ft.
  • NivoRadar® NR 4:
Compact FMCW radar sensor for bulk solids and liquids up to 30 m / 98 ft. With a 4° beam angle, fast response time, and a PVDF housing (IP66/IP68), it is ideal for hazardous areas.
  • NivoRadar® NR 7:
Cost-effective 80 GHz sensor for liquids and bulk solids up to 15 m / 49 ft. Features an 8° beam angle, fast response time, and a robust PVDF housing (IP66/IP67). Perfect for small tanks and ATEX environments.
  • NivoRadar® NR 8:
Versatile 80 GHz radar sensor for liquids in process and storage tanks, including chemicals and oils. Ensures high precision even with moving surfaces, extreme temperatures and pressures.

Advantages of Non-Contact Level Measurement

  • Highest Accuracy – Precise results with an accuracy of up to ±2 mm, even in challenging environments.
  • Non-Contact Operation – No wear and tear from mechanical stress.
  • Resistant to Process Conditions – Dust, steam, or temperature fluctuations do not affect measurement performance.
  • Minimal Dead Zone – Accurate detection even in nearly full containers.
  • Easy Installation & Operation – Quick setup and intuitive commissioning via display or UWT LevelApp.
  • Low Maintenance & Future-Proof – Reduced downtime thanks to innovative high-frequency technology.

Typical Applications of NivoRadar®

  • Bulk Solid Measurement in Silos & Stockpiles – Reliable monitoring even in dusty environments or with irregular surfaces.
  • Liquid Measurement in Tanks & Containers – Accurate readings despite moving surfaces or dynamic processes.
  • Hazardous Areas – ATEX-certified sensors for maximum safety.
  • Process Monitoring – Non-contact level measurement for various industries, unaffected by aggressive media, high temperatures, or pressure.

Future-Proof Radar Technology

The 80 GHz radar technology of NivoRadar® provides a reliable, precise, and low-maintenance solution for accurate level measurement.
With continuous advancements and intelligent sensor integration, this technology ensures high operational safety and optimised processes for the future.

Company information

UWT GmbH
UWT GmbH
The UWT has become one of the leading suppliers of measurement technology on the world market today for the level detection in silos and tanks for material manufacturing processes. When UWT started, almost 50 years ago, with the development of ingenious products. UWT supply level limit and content measurement sensors for bulk solids and liquids. A company reaches such a position only if the following key elements interact: Sound management, good understanding of the needs of the markets, innovative product solutions, skillful investment and above all, committed and dedicated employees. Different measurement techniques are used within a variety of industries depending on the medium and application in question.UWT products represent quality, flexibility and reliability in over 90 countries across the world. Having successfully solved several million applications have now been deployed in the field within the bulk solids sector, UWT has expanded still further by introducing a new and innovative product range for the liquids market which is delivering reliable solutions for applications in this area.
