Radar and Level detectors by UWT: Precision for the Food Industry

Smart sensor technology for reliable measurement and visual monitoring – even in dusty environments, narrow silos, and sensitive process conditions
Ingredients such as flour, salt or dry yeast are often stored in compact silos within the food industry – frequently connected directly to mixing or dosing systems. Dust, confined vessel geometries, and short measuring distances place high demands on the sensor technology.

UWT’s radar sensors and vibrating level switches reliably meet these challenges and ensure stable, automated processes – even with light, fine-grained materials.

Challenging conditions for level measurement

Sensors used in food production must deliver precise and reliable performance, even under difficult conditions. This includes handling fine, lightweight bulk solids prone to bridging. Additional challenges include short measuring distances, limited installation space, and strict hygiene requirements. At the same time, integration into existing systems should be as simple and straightforward as possible.

Smart sensor solutions from UWT

Precise, compact, reliable; UWT offers a robust combination of radar and vibrating level switch technologies to meet these demanding requirements. The Mononivo® MN 4020 reliably detects full or backup conditions in downpipes. This vibration-based single-rod probe stands out with its robust design, hygienic construction, and high sensitivity from 20 g/l – ideal for fine, lightweight bulk materials prone to bridging.
For continuous level measurement, the NivoRadar® NR 3100 is the sensor of choice. Its compact plastic horn antenna and non-contact 80 GHz technology ensure accurate and stable readings – even at short measuring distances below 3 m and with challenging media such as salt or dry yeast. The system is completely maintenance-free.

Sensor Solutions in Focus

Radar Technology and Vibrating Level Switches in Practical Use; NivoRadar® NR 3100: Freely radiating 80 GHz radar sensor for precise level measurement. The NivoRadar® is the ideal solution for continuous, non-contact level measurement in demanding bulk solid applications. Its 80 GHz radar signal with a narrow 3° beam angle delivers highly accurate results – even in dusty environments, with uneven surfaces, or in tall, narrow silos.
The NR 3100 is perfect for applications with limited space and short measuring distances thanks to its compact design and narrow beam angle. The durable plastic horn antenna provides a cost-effective design without sacrificing performance. Block distance-free measurement up to the tip of the antenna enables full utilization of silo volume. With a measuring range of up to 120 m, the sensor fits a wide range of applications – from small process vessels to large storage silos.
Quick and easy commissioning via the UWT LevelApp – directly on a smartphone or tablet, with no need for additional software or external tools. The intuitive interface enables rapid parameterization and simplifies setup, even in confined or challenging installation environments. Its maintenance-free design ensures smooth and reliable performance in daily operation.

NivoRadar® NR 3100

  • Compact design – ideal for limited space
  • No dead zone – measurement up to the antenna tip
  • Accurate results with 80 GHz and 3° beam angle
  • Fast setup via UWT LevelApp, display, or PACTware
  • Dustproof, maintenance-free, and durable
  • Food-compliant: EC 1935/2004 & FDA

Compact Vibrating Level Switch

With Single Rod Probe; The Mononivo® operates using a piezoelectrically activated vibrating rod that oscillates at its natural resonance frequency. When the rod is covered by material, the vibration changes – triggering a switching signal. This allows reliable level detection, even in narrow vessels, shafts, or downpipes.
An integrated self-cleaning function through vibration prevents material build-up on the probe. With high sensitivity from 20 g/l, this compact sensor is ideal for light, fine-grained materials such as flour, lime, plastic granules, or wood shavings. The probe extension, made entirely of stainless steel, meets the highest hygiene standards and offers excellent mechanical durability. The Mononivo® is maintenance-free, easy to integrate, and globally certified for use in hazardous (Ex) areas.

Mononivo® MN 4020:

  • Compact vibrating level switch with durable stainless steel probe
  • Sensitive from 20 g/l – ideal for fine and lightweight bulk solids
  • Perfect for narrow shafts and backup detection in pipelines
  • Plug & Play – no calibration required
  • Hygienic, easy to clean, and wear-free
  • Ex-certified for global use in hazardous areas

NivoLED® NL 9

Optical signals for greater process safety; Level sensors and other devices can be equipped with the NivoLED® NL 9 signal light to provide clear visual feedback. The compact LED visually indicates the operating status with a bright LED: green for normal operation, red for a fault – clearly visible even from a distance or in poor visibility conditions caused by dust or fog. This enables early issue detection and helps prevent unplanned downtime.
With 360° all-round visibility, high light intensity, and international Ex certification, the NivoLED® is also suitable for use in hazardous environments. Installation is flexible – mounted directly on the sensor, control panels, or switch cabinets – making it ideal for retrofit applications.

Safety and efficiency – perfectly combined

Radar level measurement, precise point level detection, and visual status indication together form an integrated solution for stable processes. The sensor technology ensures reliable replenishment control, prevents downtime, and meets the highest hygiene standards – ensuring safe and efficient production.

Safety & Explosion Protection in Level Measurement
Smart Monitoring for Maximum Process Safety – Protecting People, Environment, and Equipment In the process industry, safety and explosion protection are among the most critical requirements. Especially in areas where explosive atmospheres can occur — such as those involving flammable gases, vapors, or fine dust — choosing the right technology is essential to reliably protect people, the environment, and equipment. The right level measurement technology Level sensors and intelligent monitoring systems from UWT provide exactly the level of protection needed for sensitive applications — globally and certified according to international standards such as ATEX / IECEx, NEC / CEC, overfill prevention, or SIL. Safety & Explosion Protection starts with the right level measurement technology. In hazardous areas, choosing the right sensor technology is crucial – because different safety and technical requirements apply depending on the zone classification. These zones are defined based on how frequently an explosive atmosphere of gas or dust may occur. Classification

Safety first: UWT level measurement for dusty grain silos
Explosion protection in grain storage: Level measurement & monitoring silos – reliable and certified for Ex zones Fine dust, explosive atmosphere – challenging conditions are part of everyday operations in grain processing. Especially in mills, where large quantities of grain, meal or flour are handled and processed, the risk of dust explosions is real – and often underestimated. This makes the use of reliable, ATEX/ IECEx-certified level measurement technology all the more important. Challenge: Level measurement in Ex zone 20/21 At a grain mill in Austria, intermediate storage in a 12-meter (39-foot) high silo had to be reliably monitored. The task: a combination of continuous level measurement and precise point level detection – to effectively prevent overfilling and material shortage. Key requirements also included easy integration into the existing control system, low maintenance, and full compliance with explosion protection regulations for zones 20 and 21. Additional challenges: heavy dust generation and temporary overpressure during the filling process. The
