Bucket Elevator Inspection: Six Common Problems & How to Identify Them

Six common issues found during bucket elevator inspections, including worn components, damaged or worn buckets, loose sprockets, chain wear and loose fasteners, with practical guidance to improve safety, reliability and performance.
This whitepaper examines six common problems identified during 4B bucket elevator inspections and explains the potential consequences of each issue. It covers worn or loose slide lagging, broken and excessively worn elevator buckets, loose sprockets, chain wear and loose fasteners. The paper also highlights practical ways to identify these problems and, where applicable, how monitoring devices can provide early warning or automatic shutdown before a developing issue leads to equipment damage, reduced performance or increased safety risks. The final section explains how regular inspections can help identify problems and support corrective action to bring a bucket elevator back to optimum performance.

Manganese Steel Wear Rails for Conveyor Drag Chains
4B Manganese Steel Wear Rails provide a low friction, highly wear-resistant ‘running surface’ for conveyor drag chains. Specifically designed for the use with drop forged, heat-treated chain links, 4B Manganese Steel Wear Rails provide a low friction, highly wear-resistant ‘running surface’ for conveyor drag chains. They extend the life of chain conveyor casing bottom plates (and other areas, depending on machine design, handled material and application), protecting against costly wear and premature casing panel replacement. Benefits of work hardening and low friction The combination of a ductile core and a hardened surface results in a durable solution for heavily loaded conveyor systems. The low-friction running surface reduces energy consumption and minimises stress on the conveyor chain, contributing to extended component life and lower operating costs. * Increased wear resistance through work hardening * Extended service life of conveyor casings * Reduced energy consumption due to low friction * High toughness with good formability * Non-magnetic material properties Applications…

Case Study: Elevator Monitoring System Upgrade
Smarter Elevator Safety – Seamless Integration. -How a Leading Pet Food Manufacturer Modernised Their Hazard Monitoring System with 4B’s IE-Node A prominent pet food manufacturer in Suffolk, UK, recently undertook a significant upgrade of its hazard monitoring systems across 16 bucket elevators. The company sought a modern solution that would not only restore safety compliance but also integrate seamlessly with their existing PLC infrastructure. For this complex task, they turned to 4B Braime, a recognised name in bulk material handling solutions and industrial safety systems. Known for its robust engineering capabilities and turnkey services, 4B was selected to design, supply, and install a solution that would meet the manufacturer’s current and future hazard monitoring needs. Challenge The pet food facility had previously installed a network of hazard sensors to monitor belt misalignment, speed, and component temperature. However, over time, these sensors had either failed or been disconnected, leaving the system ineffective. In some cases, visible wear was evident - such as a belt wearing through…

4B GROUP Expands Heavy Duty Jumbo Elevator Bucket Line
The new 20x10 inch size addition offers even greater versatility and efficiency for a wide range of material handling applications. 4B GROUP Launches New Jumbo Elevator Bucket Size 4B GROUP is excited to expand its Jumbo elevator bucket line (type JCC-S) to include a new 20x10 inch size, increasing versatility and efficiency for material handling applications. Roger Bruère of 4B’s Material Handling Division states that Jumbo products are considered the most efficient and durable elevator buckets available in the global market today. The new 20x10 option is ideal for high-throughput bucket elevator systems, grain loading port or train terminals, or high-wear applications where the elevator is feeding on the downside or moving abrasive products. This addition brings the Jumbo CC-S elevator bucket range to seven different sizes, offering greater flexibility for various processing needs. Features and Benefits of the Jumbo 20x10 Part of 4B’s “High Efficiency” range, the Jumbo 20x10 elevator bucket offers superior abrasion resistance and durability due to its thickest corners, front face,…

4B WDB83X Contact Bearing Temperature Sensors
WDB83x contact bearing sensors offer protection from overheating with built-in grease nipple, NC circuit, and PLC/monitor compatibility—simple, safe, reliable. The WDB83x series is a range of contact bearing temperature sensors designed to provide reliable over-temperature protection for bearings. Each sensor is manufactured to screw directly into the bearing housing for direct contact monitoring and is equipped with a built-in grease nipple, allowing for lubrication without the need to remove the sensor. The sensor includes a fixed two-core cable for easy connection to a monitoring device or junction box. As the wiring is not polarity sensitive, installation is simplified, and the cable can be extended in the field if needed. All sensors in the WDB83x series operate in a normally closed (NC) state, meaning the circuit remains closed under normal conditions. When the preset temperature limit is exceeded, the bimetal element opens the circuit to trigger an alarm. The circuit automatically resets once the temperature drops back below the reset threshold. These sensors are primarily used for over-temperature protection in…
