PaaS Packaging as a Service Modell
More information

Bagging bulk materials without buying the packaging system

GREIF-VELOX and CHG-Meridian combine bagging technology, service and flexible rental models. This enables companies to build or expand packaging capacity without having to invest directly in their own equipment.
How can companies add new bulk material bagging capacity when production volumes increase, new products are introduced or new markets are entered, without having to invest directly in their own packaging equipment?

GREIF-VELOX and CHG-Meridian are expanding their collaboration in the field of Packaging as a Service (PaaS®). The joint model combines industrial packaging technology with technical services and individually structured rental models. This enables companies to build additional packaging capacity or modernize existing solutions without having to purchase the equipment outright.

Adapting packaging capacity to demand

Especially when building new production capacities, launching products or entering new markets, capacity utilization often develops gradually. The PaaS® concept allows contract terms, payment structures and service components to be adapted to the respective business situation and expected development.

The bagging system is not considered an isolated investment. Depending on the agreed scope, the overall concept can also include maintenance, technical support, spare and wear parts, as well as packaging and consumable materials.

GREIF-VELOX contributes its packaging technology, technical system integration and related services. CHG-Meridian adds its expertise in structuring individual rental agreements. The result is a model that combines technology and operational support with greater financial flexibility and planning certainty.

More flexibility when adding new bagging capacity

Instead of a high initial investment, companies make contractually agreed payments over a defined period. This can keep capital available for other operational priorities. At the same time, payment structures can be aligned with the development of the respective business model. For example, lower payments during the ramp-up phase can be combined with higher payments at a later stage.

Usage-based components are also possible as the model develops further. With a pay-per-use approach, parameters such as consumption, operating hours or defined production volumes can be incorporated into the contract structure.

More than simply providing a machine

Packaging as a Service goes beyond a conventional leasing model. The focus is not solely on the use of the packaging equipment, but on an integrated concept for the ongoing packaging process. Service, maintenance, spare parts supply and additional services can be incorporated from the outset.

“For our customers, it is not only about which machine they use, but how reliably and economically their entire packaging process operates. Together with CHG-Meridian, we can combine the technical implementation and operational support of the equipment with flexible usage models,” says Sebastian Pohl, Managing Director of GREIF-VELOX.

For companies looking to expand or modernize their bulk material bagging operations or build new production capacity, PaaS® therefore provides an alternative to conventional equipment purchasing. The required packaging technology can be combined with tailored services and an individually structured rental model.

Automated drum filling with VeloDrum SafeClosure
With VeloDrum SafeClosure, GREIF-VELOX automates the opening and closing of fine-thread bung closures during drum filling. The system is also suitable for reconditioned drums. Integration of the Closure Principle Many industrial filling processes are largely automated; however, opening and closing fine-thread bung closures often still involves manual steps. With VeloDrum SafeClosure, GREIF-VELOX has developed a patent-pending solution that integrates this process step into automated drum filling. Position, tool engagement, and screwing are checked on the process side. Monitored Process in Six Steps The automated sequence is divided into six steps: positioning, checking, opening, filling, closing, and verifying. First, the bung hole is approached with vision guidance. An overpressure test confirms correct fit and sealing. The screwdriver tool then engages the plug and opens it under torque monitoring. After filling, the plug is automatically screwed back in. Torque and screw-in depth then confirm correct screwing. Use with Reconditioned Drums VeloDrum SafeClosure can also be used with reconditioned drums from the circular economy, provided…

Production Start Instead of Infrastructure Projects: Mobile Bagging
GREIF-VELOX's container-based solution delivers a ready-to-operate bagging system directly to the production site. This significantly reduces installation and integration efforts while creating flexible production capacities for bulk materials. The requirements for modern production facilities are changing. Companies today need flexible capacities, short project lead times, and investment solutions that can quickly adapt to changing market conditions. With the VeloUnit Container, GREIF-VELOX has developed a mobile bagging solution that meets exactly these requirements: a pre-assembled container-based plant for fast and efficient bulk material bagging with minimal installation effort. The VeloUnit Container combines the proven technology of the GREIF-VELOX BVPV gross pneumatic packer with a modular container-based system concept. Thanks to its high degree of pre-assembly, installation, integration, and commissioning efforts are significantly reduced. To start production, users only need to connect the container modules and provide a power supply. Extensive construction work and lengthy installation phases are largely eliminated. Flexibility Through Container-Based Design The container concept enables operation…

Retrofit Instead of New Build: Münzing Automates Packaging Line
Münzing upgrades an existing BVP packer with a bag placer and conveyor system. The retrofit increases automation, reuses existing infrastructure and achieves an output of 60 bags per hour at a bag weight of 20 kilograms. Modernizing a packaging process does not always require a completely new system. When existing machinery is technically sound, it can be more economical and sustainable to automate selected process steps and adapt the equipment to changing production requirements. This was the approach taken by additive manufacturer Münzing together with GREIF-VELOX. An existing manually operated BVP packer was expanded with additional components to create a largely automated packaging line. Targeted Upgrade of the Existing BVP Packer The starting point of the project was an existing BVP packer used for filling wax products with additives into bags. Instead of replacing the machine entirely, the project team assessed how the packaging process could be automated through a targeted retrofit. The system was equipped with an S1 automatic bag placer and a bag conveyor line. The bag placer automatically feeds the empty bags and positions them on the filling spout. After filling, the bags…

How to package ultralight powders efficiently
Ultralight powders such as carbon black, silica, pigments, fibres or certain pesticides place particular demands on packaging processes. The challenge is not only to fill a product into a bag with precision. What matters is the entire process: from safe product handling and low-dust filling to compaction, sealing and the creation of stable, stackable packaging units for storage, transport and logistics. Especially when handling very fine and light bulk materials, conventional packaging methods often reach their limits. These products typically have a very low bulk density, tend to generate dust and are difficult to form into stable bags. The result can be voluminous, unstable bags that require significant storage and transport capacity and create additional challenges in downstream handling. Vacuum compaction as a key technology GREIF-VELOX’s VeloVac technology is designed specifically for these requirements. At the heart of the process is vacuum compaction for ultralight powders. By compacting the product inside the bag in a controlled way, the volume can be significantly reduced. This results in more compact, stable and stackable bags. This improves the entire…
